Beaver The beaver builds its lodge out of intertangled twigs and sticks; as freezing weather nears they plaster the lodge with mud making a concrete layer that no predator can break through. |

Capybara The name 'capybara' means 'master of the grasses' in the language of the Guarani Indians and water pig in another language. |

Chinchillas The soft dense coat is a distinctive silver-gray. The chincillia closely resembles the squirrel with its bushy tail. The ears are quite long and the eyes are round and bright. |

Lemmings One true lemming, as well as several closely related species commonly called lemmings, live in Alaska. Distinguishing one from the other, or even lemmings from voles, is difficult. Many of the small rodents in the north have a similar appearance, especially during the summer months. |

Porcupine The porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) is second in size only to the beaver among rodents of Alaska and has the northernmost range of all the world's porcupines. |
