 Chordata :: carnivora
Canada lynx
The Canada lynx Lynx canadensis is a beautiful wild felid (or cat) of the boreal forest. Like the cougar and the bobcat, the other two members of the cat family (Felidae) native to Canada, the Canada lynx (referred to as lynx in this text) tends to be secretive and most active at night and, like them it is rarely seen in the wild.
Canidae
The Carnivora is the result of a great radiation of mammals that ate meat. But not all meat eaters are in this order; carnivorous species can certainly be found among, for example, the marsupials, bats, primates, cetaceans, and others.
Felidae
Felids are perhaps the most specialized hunters of the carnivores, relying almost exclusively on prey that they have killed themselves.
Grizzly
The grizzly Ursus arctos horribilis Ord, a subspecies of the circumpolar brown bear, has always been something of an enigma. A large body of folklore and tales has grown up around this much talked about and feared, but little understood, animal.
Herpestidae
Mongooses are mainly African, with one genus also widespread in Asia and southern Europe (and it has been widely introduced elsewhere).
Hyaenidae
The family Hyaenidae contains four species, each in its own genus, found in Africa, SW Asia, and India. Three species, which include the animals we usually think of as hyaenas (Crocuta crocuta, Hyaena hyaena, and Parahyaena brunnea), hunt and scavenge large vertebrate prey.
Mustelidae
This is by far the largest family of Carnivora, containing nearly twice as many species (65, in 25 genera) as the next most speciose group (the Herpestidae).
Odobenidae
A single Recent species makes up this family, which was considerably more diverse in the past. Walruses are found in northern seas, usually above 58 degrees latitude, but occasionally straying further south.
Order Carnivora
The Carnivora is the result of a great radiation of mammals that ate meat. But not all meat eaters are in this order; carnivorous species can certainly be found among, for example, the marsupials, bats, primates, cetaceans, and others.
Otariidae
This family includes 14 species in 7 genera. Their distribution is complex. In the Pacific, they are found along the North and South American coasts, the coasts of central and northern Asia, and on New Zealand and several other islands, including the Galapagos.
