 News :. People, help pets!
This week is National Animal Shelter Appreciation week so, today Anchorage Animal Control held an open house to give the community a chance to see what they do.

Here at Anchorage Animal Control you might find a little orange guy named, Pumpkin. He's one of the foster kitties available for adoption. Today, Animal Control wants the people of Anchorage to know that they perform a lot of services that help all these little guys--puppies and kittens alike.

'Our goal is just to educate the community about being a responsible pet owner. Our hope is that they find a lifetime friend,' said Maria Martin of Anchorage Animal Care and Control.

And there are plenty of friends to be found. At any given time Anchorage Animal Care and Control has 150 to 170 animals, most of them cats.

'Kittens go pretty fast, as you can imagine. But our older cats, it's tough sometimes to get them adopted,' said Martin.

Cats not your thing? Don't worry, there are plenty of dogs here for you to search among in your task to find man's or woman's best friend. At the shelter, you'll find all different breeds, all different sizes of dogs. I found a large breed of dog that looks like a German Shepard/ Lab mix. In addition to mixes, purebred dogs are in here more often than you'd think.

But don't just chose the first sad puppy eyes you see.

'We encourage when people are coming down that they don't just see the cute little dog and just go and adopt it. We want people to walk it. Spend some time with it,' said Martin.

The knowledgeable staff and volunteers can help you pick out the perfect pet but, if you are touring alone, check out the Kennel cards. They provide you with all sorts of vital information, such as name, sex, and age.

'We also have a spot for our volunteers who spend the most time with our animals to kind of explain what the personality is and what they like to do,' said Martin.

So, if you are looking for a pet, be sure to consider Animal Control as a place to find the newest member of your family.

Now if you guys want to help out Anchorage Animal Control in any way, they really need volunteers. You can give them a call to figure out how you can help. They accept donations.
